Exploring the Three Quilles: One of Quillan's Most Iconic Walks

By Richard SimpsonJune 11, 2026

Rising above the rooftops of Quillan, the Three Quilles (Trois Quilles) are among the most recognisable landmarks in the Upper Aude Valley. These three distinctive hills dominate the skyline and are so closely linked to the town that they are believed to have inspired the name "Quillan" itself.

For visitors staying in Quillan, the Three Quilles offer one of the most rewarding half-day walks in the region, combining Mediterranean vegetation, forest trails, limestone ridges, and breathtaking views across the Pyrenean foothills.

What Are the Three Quilles?

The Three Quilles are three hills that stand immediately above Quillan. The highest of the three is the Pic de Bitrague, which reaches 647 metres above sea level and rises around 360 metres above the town below.

From almost anywhere in Quillan, you can look up and see these distinctive peaks forming a natural backdrop to the town. They have become a symbol of the area and even lend their name to local sporting events and clubs such as the Trail des 3 Quilles.

The Walk to Pic de Bitrague

One of the most popular routes starts near Quillan's former railway station and climbs steadily towards the Pic de Bitrague. The route is approximately 6.5 km with around 350 metres of ascent and typically takes about 2½ hours. It is considered a moderate walk suitable for reasonably fit hikers.

The trail initially follows a pleasant balcony path through vegetation more typical of southern France than the high mountains. As you gain height, the views open up across the Quillan basin and surrounding countryside.

The final approach to the summit is steep and can be challenging in warm weather, but the reward is worth every step.

Spectacular Views Across the Haute Vallée de l'Aude

From the summit of Pic de Bitrague, hikers are rewarded with a 360-degree panorama stretching across:

  • The Cirque de Quillan

  • The dramatic Pierre-Lys Gorge

  • The Corbières hills

  • The surrounding Pyrenean foothills

  • Quillan and the Upper Aude Valley below

On clear days, the views are among the finest easily accessible panoramas in the entire Haute Vallée de l'Aude.

A Favourite with Trail Runners

The Three Quilles are not just popular with walkers. The ridges feature prominently in the annual Trail de Quillan, one of the region's largest outdoor sporting events. Organisers describe the ridge section as technically demanding but offering exceptional scenery.

Thousands of runners and spectators visit Quillan each year to experience these trails and the spectacular viewpoints they offer.

Tips for Walking the Three Quilles

  • Wear sturdy walking shoes with good grip.

  • Carry plenty of water, particularly during summer.

  • Start early in warmer months to avoid the midday heat.

  • Allow extra time for photographs at the summit viewpoints.

  • Check local weather forecasts before setting out.

Why Visitors Love This Walk

The Three Quilles perfectly capture what makes Quillan special. Within minutes of leaving the town centre, walkers find themselves surrounded by nature, enjoying panoramic views that stretch across one of the most beautiful parts of southern France.

Whether you're an experienced hiker or simply looking for a memorable morning walk during your stay, the Three Quilles and Pic de Bitrague provide an unforgettable introduction to the landscapes of the Haute Vallée de l'Aude.
